It wasn't about the Taliban, other than they hated the Taliban for refusing to allow opium to be cultivated. Opium trade is what funded US led covert wars in Xinjiang since the 1990s. The Afghanistan war was really about creating a pan Turkic puppet state out Xinjiang province controlled by the US and turkey to try and destroy China and Russian hegemony in the region.
