I think it's kind of ambiguous. Could just be the usual Kremnoan philosophy of honor in death and might makes right because just before the fight starts he tells Khaslana to let the Mydei of the next cycle know that Phainon/Khaslana is a worthy opponent and that he shouldn't slack off. But our Phainon in 3.0 or 3.1 also mentions something along the lines that Mydei tends to lose himself in battle.
