Due to its financial crisis, the Port of Eilat has not paid property taxes to the Eilat Municipality in recent months, leading to the accumulation of debts amounting to millions of shekels. In response, the Eilat Municipality imposed a freeze on the Port's bank accounts. As a result, the Ports and Maritime Authority announced that the Port will cease its operations completely on Sunday.

The closure of the port has repercussions that go beyond economic profit and loss, as the port is considered a strategic national asset and constitutes the southern gateway to "Israel."

The National Emergency Authority sent a message clarifying that the closure of the Port of Eilat will lead to the cessation of its locomotives and ships, will halt assistance to the Navy in the Red Sea region, disrupt the Asia-Europe pipeline that transports crude oil from Eilat to Ashkelon, and will harm the export of potash from the Dead Sea factories, which will only be possible to export from through the Port of Ashdod.
