But no, the Soviets joining the war did not change anything. Atomics did. The simple fact that a single American bomber and a single bomb can wipe out an entire city was unprecidented at the time and changed the maths in any decisions. If these weapons were availible or could be produced in any numbers, that meant the actual eradication of the Japanese as a people.
