I wasn't the one who started it, but I wouldn't doubt that distinct longing for ancient times was what spurred it on initially.

True. Sidestepping the Anonymous mask when appropriate was notably more pliable back then, rather than being some punishable-by-death vice that younger generations seem to believe is ironclad for some reason.
Outside of blatant trolls (of which /did/ certainly exist, albeit in not as annoyingly great a number), it was generally understood that while (You) played with people who were Anon, everyone had their own in-game name and identity to them as an inherent part of the game's structure, which was completely fine.
It wasn't some hex put upon you to have others call you by your in-game alias elsewhere at the time (which is why I strongly believe the whole "censored names" thing came from a younger generation of Anon).

Of course, as you stated, this did lead to a lot of Known Names getting thrown around like bludgeons as well. Would be a complete lie for me to state things were squeaky-clean in the 2000s/2010s MMO landscape on this site by any means. But it did still have a vastly different vibe about it.

Drama and theatrics would absolutely still litter certain Generals (some more than others), but you could tell the majority of people both posting and playing were wanting to have fun together. A much wider array of MMO Generals were quite popular, and had dozens of Anon playing at once, regularly posting about their times and sharing screenshots in the thread all the while.
Compare that to today, where your average /vg/ thread (or even some /vm/ ones) looks like it's comprised of a small group of people who actually play, a much larger group who only exist to troll and stir nonexistent drama (who very likely don't play at all), and barely any screenshots or fanart to be found.

There's just less camaraderie going around, and it's not hard to feel that difference.
