There used to be a time where the majority of Japanese products were cheap knockoffs. Over time, their quality increased to the point where they superseded the rest of the world's domestic offerings and were able to innovate on their own. Wonder if any other country's followed that formula.

I live in the part of the US where you do actually have low speed rail. My commute consists of a five minute walk to my local train station, an hourlong train ride, then a 10 minute subway ride downtown. Still great in spite of how antiquated it can be.
