Playing an out of season Nightmare Night special in,
>/FSBC/

There's currently an /mlp/ online convention going on, which means I only finished one of the two fics. It is a shame. I should be able to respond about the Maize by the time (You) start posting, but as of writing this, I've only finished Skeleton.

Some things about it are immediately obvious. Firstly, this is very anime-inspired. Not so much the events or even the characters, but the dialogues, the overall presentation, and even the way it tackles its premise, to a certain extent. You may disagree, but I don't actually mind that much, though of course that's a part of it being an AU. Other parts of the AU include the weeb-brained aging up of the Ponyville elementary school cast to the classic high school setting and turning Equestria into some kind of pop culture monster world—which, to my understanding, is actually the Witch in Broad Daylight universe, too. So we're in pretty deep AU here, but that's all fine since the AU is fun. It could be argued that the violence ponies show towards all these undead&co make it non-pony, but while I was worried about it at first, the tone of the story and ponies' behavior keeps it more than enough 'pony'.

What is less fun is the level of carelessness shown in the proofreading—or the lack of it. Maybe you can argue it's not as big of a deal in a less-than-serious story, but missing words(!), frequent typos, and arbitrary comma usage do not help the fic. The last time we read a fic with so many little errors was... huh, the adoption anon story. Damn it, /fimfic/ writers, proofreading is important!
t. also hasn't proofread the last written thing he posted

But anyway, I ended up liking the fic. It wasn't the most totally amazing story I've ever read, but it's short and fun, with plenty of pretty cool (if cliched) nightmare settings to explore. Making the setting a dream that has to obey fair play rules is a bit of a cheat in terms of letting the author write what they want without keeping internal logic strictly consistent, but hey, I won't be complaining too loud if that makes the fic work. I also don't entirely get the [Comedy] tag on this, but maybe it's there to balance out the [Horror]—warning the readers to not expect "serious" horror here.
Neat!

Nobody voted so next week we're reading randomly chosen one of these three:
https://www.fimfiction.net/story/191237/ghost-of-a-rose (ch.1-5 on week one),
https://www.fimfiction.net/story/455858/the-bug-in-the-cave (ch.1-13, including 'Red Hooved', on week one),
or https://www.fimfiction.net/story/328030/her-soldiers-we (whole fic)
1-7 for Ghost, 7-14 for Bug (unstuck), 15-20 for the lunafic.
