Roses are the hardest to come by purple gift, but they're also the strongest. Reserve that gift for when you really need it
Most of the time you hold gifts up in the cafe it'll look something like this. Notice the faces above each student, indicating how much they like the gift. The only one responding to the gift is Iori currently, but she only "likes it", so I'd save the gift for someone that "loves it"
