It's like what that OppositeWinner guy was saying in his schizoid meanderings. There's very little out there who claim to be a fan of this series and genuinely enjoy the canon material, let alone interact with the games, manga, and music CDs. They may not be special compared to their competition but the fact remains that none of the popular fan media would exist without the games giving the initial ideas out to the drawing board. After all, what would exist of fan creations if not for the original source? That's where the first distinction of Touhou: The Series and Touhou: The Phenomena is drawn out.

The second distinction is within the fanbase itself. All these bandwagon hoppers who arrive looks into what the fan-made content offers, get burnt out from constant exposure within an unspecified time frame, and then leave for something else. This category applies to anyone who did have a passing interest at one point. Those who are stricken with a bizarre case of Stockholm Syndrome will remain as tourists from the day they come in until they depart for Vtubers or a different gacha game; some of which never interacted with the official material, much less obtain a 1cc. And this can take years to fully move on, depending how far into this rabbit hole you are. In my time of being into this series, I say this group roughly accounts for 33% of the 90% who never touched the Z and X keys in context of gameplay in their lives.

The artist case exemplifies this bastardization as this is where a good chunk of exposure takes place other than lame YouTube Fumo meme videos and a whole lot of Bad Apple remixes. Because now, there's not one fundamental interpretation of a certain character and this is all by design. ZUN could try and make it concrete but it's far too late to do anything about it, just like the last time he attempted this in the previous written work. Hell, the fortune slip one that came out recently isn't even fully solid in its interpretation since it is viewed in the perspective of Reimu. As it stands, there does not exist anything solid with the characters of Touhou and their only true purpose is to be a skin suit.

Taking this franchise seriously is a fools errand at the end of the day. Plenty of social media sites don't do it, /jp/ doesn't do that, and you shouldn't either. If you like it as it is, that's just how it is and those who are not satisfied have a whole lifetimes worth of things to invest in if they're that autistic to stay in those corners.

The TL;DR here is simple: Touhou is about as free-flowing as a dirty river with no destination, no one's interpretation of the series is the correct one and we are all tourists with too much expectations.
