Let me be absolutely clear: I don’t agree with Tommy Robinson, and I strongly condemn many of the things he’s said. But it’s important that we don’t allow political debate in this country to become so polarised, so hostile to nuance, that we throw terms like “far right” around without precision. Tommy Robinson is not a fascist. He’s not calling for the overthrow of democracy. He’s not promoting racial supremacy. What he is, is a deeply controversial figure who raises genuine concerns—about public safety, institutional accountability, and free speech—though far too often in a way that’s divisive, inflammatory, and irresponsible. That doesn’t excuse his mistakes, and it certainly doesn’t mean we should give him a platform unchecked. But in a democracy, if we want to win arguments, we have to do so with facts, not just labels. We must be better than name-calling—we must challenge bad ideas, not silence them. That’s how we build a country rooted in truth, decency, and justice.
