Sometimes what you end up doing isn't really your decision. They live in a world where suffering is almost everywhere and thus the norm. To them it makes sense to follow these rules because its natural. To me and you it seems obvious that its a bad deal and not a wise move but in times of desperation people are willing to do anything. It's why people in unfortunate areas join street gangs and kill people for small slights to them; they simply don't know any better and are unable to remove themselves from the struggle. One's social environment shapes them more than anything else.
