Taberon Honie was the 8th in the post-Furman era and as of 2025 most recent person executed by Utah after murdering and raping his ex-girlfriend's mother in 1998. Honie, a Hopi Indian, was born in Keams Canyon, Arizona on October 29, 1975. He began drinking alcohol at a young age, grew up in poverty, and claimed to have suffered repeated head injuries as a child. Beginning in 1995, Honie dated Carol Pikyavit, a Paiute from Utah, and they had one daughter together. They broke up in 1998 and Pikyavit went to live with her mother, 49 year old Claudia Benn, who was considered a pillar of her community and worked as a substance abuse counselor.

That July 9, Honie called Pikyavit and told her to come to his place right now or he'd murder several of her family members. However, she went to work and was not home when the murder took place. Some hours later, Honie broke into their home in Cedar City, Utah by smashing out the glass on a sliding door. Benn grabbed a kitchen knife for self-defense but was overpowered by Honie, who wrestled the knife from her hands and cut her throat so deep that it went all the way down to the vertebrae. The next morning police responded to a 911 call placed by one of her neighbors. They found the broken-out sliding door glass and Benn's stripped and mutilated corpse, which had gruesome stab wounds to the anus and vagina. Honie was found in the garage with dried blood on his fingers and arrested. He made no attempt to deny anything and readily admitted to killing her. Also in the house were Benn's three granddaughters, covered in blood; one of the girls had been raped.
