my theory is that demons/evil spirits/whatever you wanna call them can easily latch onto the specific brand of compartmentalization endemic in the healthcare field.
you're around the sick/dying or schizos all day, it's extremely emotionally exhausting and the two most common responses are to either wall that shit off mentally or get burnt out and stop really seeing the patients as people in the same way you see your friends or family as people. eventually, watching someone die and informing the next of kin as a hospice nurse or drugging up those experiencing psychosis as a psych ward worker will cease to elicit an emotional response, and i think that's when the first seeds are planted.
