I think more than anything communism was very 20th century. Like "high" 20th century or High Modernism. It's all about how society can be engineered through a plan with blueprints and technological control. Rule by engineers, planners, and ideologues. Uniform housing blocs, collectivized farms. I see this remaining somewhat in China and also with various tech lords in Western countries, but reading old communist stuff is like looking at a whole different mentality or philosophy. Just the way they talked was different.
