So Gerda has the power to time travel exactly five times before she dies, and she's already used four of them at this point in the plot, so the next time she time travels she'll die. Gerda then gets a magical knife that lets a person time travel one more time if she stabs someone with it. This really seems like she's basically been given two ways to kill herself (and I'm pretty sure I know what the contrivance to start the next route will be).
