I think the weakness in us cartoons and comics is the big part of it, particularly with shit that actually interests adults
the amount of threads over currently airing cartoons has gone way down over the years and more and more people don't watch tv
also worth noting that other boards are dying in their own ways as well, like /vp/ never recovered from dexit (but that applies to pokemon discussion on the whole internet too)
