Because if gravity isn't a force, then it leaves a gap in the standard model. If the standard model is right, they can account for everything except gravity. Not having gravity makes everything else less certain. It's like you have built an arch but realize too late that you can't find the keystone, so you have to leave the scaffolding in place.
