Just use something like Ubuntu or Mint if you want it to "just work". That's the neat thing about Linux, you can choose how much you care about getting your hands dirty.
I find ricing retarded as well, I just run plain Ubuntu MATE with all animations and dumb shit turned off so it's as lightweight as possible.
