Famous Ucranians in Argentina
Ivan Romanoff was born in Odessa (Ucraine) on 19th of August 1889. He became active in anarchist circles and had to flee the Russian Empire, emigrating to Argentina where he became involved in local anarchist groups.
In sunday 26th June 1910, shortly before the country's 100th anniversary of independence, Romanoff broke into a gala dinner of landowners held in the famous Colon theatre in Buenos Aires with an associate and threw dynamite into the large hall. It landed into an empty seat and exploded. A female child sitting close by was hurt and a female adult also suffered burns.
Argentine society was very agitated due to this direct attack against the landowning elite. It was already agitated since in the previous year a police chief was murdered by an anarchist activist (Simón Radowitzky, also Ucranian, from Dinipro)
Romanoff was arrested a few days later, sentenced to 3 years in jail and expelled from Argentina.
