Getting too mechanically complex right out of the gate.

There's also the classic damned- if you do, damned if you don't DM/GM trap which applies to this hobby as well: people overplan and then get frustrated and railroad or lose steam when things don't go according to plan, or they do barely any planning and realize they have no idea what to do after a few updates.

Getting too involved in early character creation is another big one you'll hear a lot, thoguh I think a few early choices to establish the type of character and basic personality is fine (good, actually).

To that I'd add: over-dependence on dice -- if a failed roll will prematurely end/ruin the quest for you, don't include that roll.

I was a bit surprised people didn't go for Volka in Dark Quest, and with how nice and wholesome Elliot Hallaster of Disappearing Hogwarts and Mark DeLucia of Gotham City Beat Cop ended up.
