One of the chief reasons for the decline of gaming is graphics evolving to first semi- and, in recent years, borderline photorealistic levels, which prompted the cancerous trend of the "cinematic experience”. This formed a certain state of mind that games must be ashamed of being games and should be more like movies.
That in turn attracted a host of failed wannabe movie/tv writers to the medium. So we ended up with games that are shallow mechanically because they don't want to be games and written terribly because they adopted the shitty HBO/Netflix writing.
