The dummy balloon case is exactly what I was thinking of and the main time I see people bring it up, that they work by actually tricking them into displaying a fake image. It being plainly visually disproved by them showing the balloons instead through the camera is the bit that gets me riled up over it. Otherwise it's just cases of manually enhancing super long distance images, which doesn't feel like the same matter.
I don't think anyone would want their cameras to constantly display made up info even if it was supposed to be clarified or something. Just sounds like a really lousy idea.
