It's not natural selection actually. It's sexual selection. Specifically the Fisherian Runaway mechanism, and the phenomenon in question is called "Female Choice," and it effectively works against natural selection. It's when females, while unrestricted, select for beauty traits that work against the survival of the species. Many species -like Mallard ducks, dolphins, insects, mammals, birds, reptiles, and even humans- evolved coercive mating tactics to mitigate the side effects of this phenomenon.
