I -think- what Mike wants is a person he can strongly relate with, who actually cares about him in return. Obviously a romantic partner is off the table because of Sandy, so it has to be a platonic best friend situation. But not a lot of characters fit those criteria. Lucy is nuts and won't take anything short of romantic potential. James dropped Mike pretty much the moment he got turned down. Paulo just sucks and will be spending all his time with Daisy anyway, and vice versa. Sue is a bossy bitch who probably still blames him over Lucy, and she's Amaya's obvious choice in bestie. I get the impression that none of the track team share Mike's interests outside of running, but that's on Taeshi to show.
