The main issue with base stallions is the jaw area, yeah. Ponies are inherently circular beings, literally all curves, but then the stallions face is a square for some reason. It ends up looking like someone vacuumed a mare's face into being longer.
It's why whenever they designed a new stallion that used the base model and was important to the story, they tried to give them sharper elements in their designs, like Thunderlane's mohawk, Braeburn's gay cowboy costume and Quibble's collar. (Sunburst is an exception where by adding the goatee, he actually goes back to having a circular overall shape)
