Ants have a weak point: When the queen dies, the colony dies. Worker or soldier drones cannot transform into queens. Queens only grow from fertilized eggs, which require mating drones. Mating drones are only produced on special occasions, normally there are none.
Slow-acting insecticides like sodium borate are the best approach. It takes 48-72 hours before it kills. Poison a sugar cube with such an insecticide. The ants carry it into the nest, feed each other, their larvae and their queen with it. When the poison finally strikes, the queen and the better part of the drones die. Any survivors keep collecting food and defending the colony until they die of old age. But with no replacements.
