Political leniency is how we got here. Historically, I don't think that the Revolutionary War was anything but domestic terrorism. At the time they were seen as scum by 50% of the population (loyalists), and troublemakers by another 30%. Then they won, and now opinions and arguments and debates no longer mattered.
Just do a little madlibs with the players and you have the same recipe. The difference is the standard for the breaking point. AC and internet are comforts too great to give up to the average person.
