In my experience, it's been that people just quit the game because it goes too long without any meaningful content. Then the FC is too new, and has too few members, to survive the drought. Core lived because it's old and its core (haha) members were tenacious and didn't abandon it so there was always someone willing to pick up the pieces every time Yoshida took another hammer to it.
