this board is usually dogshit but a few weeks ago someone made a thread berating the "death of the popstar" with some really good points and it really made me think
these past few years (especially after covid) there have been almost 0 "culture defining" moments that had a majority of people tuning in. Like you say, even western pop artists are becoming niche. Everyone is focusing on fostering their own fanbases. You couldn't have a Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber in todays climate. Social media definitely plays a role here. It's all very interesting.
In that thread OP was arguing that we're going back to a pre-internet type culture where most celebrities are micro-celebrities only known by local townsfolk (read, only known by a very specific social media audience), with very little potential for breakout stars.
