Saints Peter and Paul, two prominent figures in early Christianity, were both martyred in Rome. While Peter was crucified upside down, Paul was beheaded. These events are believed to have occurred around 64-67 AD during the reign of Emperor Nero, who blamed Christians for the Great Fire of Rome.
Saint Peter:
Peter, one of the twelve apostles and the first Bishop of Rome, was crucified upside down at his own request, as he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus.
His crucifixion is traditionally believed to have taken place near the Circus of Nero, close to the present-day St. Peter's Basilica.
Saint Paul:
Paul, a Roman citizen, was beheaded rather than crucified, as Roman citizens were exempt from crucifixion.
His execution is said to have occurred outside the ancient city walls of Rome, near a place known as the Fontane (three fountains), where the Church of the Martyrdom of St. Paul at Three Fountains is located.
Tradition holds that his head bounced three times, creating three springs at the site.
