Nta, but I always take the "death of the author" approach towards media. Regardless of whatever the creator says, I will always have my own interpretation/headcanons. Because otherwise, things like shipping gets very tedious when one wants to follow the author's words to a tee.

Anyways, I fucking love the direction of the show. The restructuring of Tanaka's introduction alleviates some of the heavy lore drops the manga has later on. I hope this means that the story will be told better.
