Furthermore, there are major advantages to being a foreigner in Japan, especially an American, if you make the effort to not be fat and to be clean shaven, polite, and hygienic. For you, people are more easily impressed, and standards are lowered automatically. For example, the only non-native diet member is a British man who has lived in Japan for 30 years and even members of his own campaign staff would be consistently baffled by his ability to read. Some people find this demeaning, but if you can swallow your pride you can see how massively advantageous this can be. My read on it isn’t that they (by and large) think Europeans are too stupid to speak/read perfect Japanese, but that they are aware of how alien our two languages are to each other and know that there are few non-native Japanese speakers. Many of them also have broken English despite a lifetime of public school education so they will find your self-studied Japanese, even if somewhat halting and intermediate, fairly impressive.
