He subsequently wrote a book, On the Golden Bridge [detailing Mao’s famine under the communist regime]. Following are some extracts:

‘In one four-member family, the son had died leaving behind his mother, wife, and daughter. One day the little girl died, and the young mother stood over her daughter’s body in the courtyard, too dazed and feeble to weep. The grandmother dragged herself out of the house and pulled the girl’s bony corpse into the backyard. After a while, the mother went back and discovered that the grandmother had chopped the girl into pieces and cooked her. The grandmother died nonetheless, perhaps overwhelmed by the gravity of her crime.’
