QAnon in particular really couldn't exist before social media. Though there was already a great deal of conspiratorial thinking in the popular American consciousness that started after the assassinations of the 60s and continued into the 90s. In hindsight, it's incredible that pic related and Oliver Stone's JFK were both mainstream movies.
