Something catches in your throat as you mumble out a pathetic thank you. You never asked for gratitude, not from the human slaves and certainly not from their alien comrades either. But even now, even when faced with the practical certainty of their grim end in the near future, here they are thanking you for giving them the chance of a taste of freedom. You don’t think you’ll be able to look these people in the eye when the time comes. When the Company does eventually pull up stakes and leave the League of Dis and everyone in it to their fate.
As the last of the groups leave, Breaker motions for you to stay behind. Hail gives you a nod before he exits, an unspoken agreement to meet up later. Soon it’s just you and the gigantic Auxl, his sheer presence sill filling up much of the room regardless. Long moments pass before he finally speaks, his voice firm as always but his tone sombre.
“A WARRIOR’S DEATH AWAITS THOSE WHO STAY, AND THAT IS A FATE WORTHY OF THE HIGH PLACES.” Breaker pauses, a thick gnarled thumb and finger stroking his chin in a curiously man-like gesture. “YOUR HUMAN CULTURE HAS THIS, THE VIRTUE OF AN HONOURABLE END?”
“Warrior? I don’t know about that. Soldier, maybe. But I’ve always preferred the attitude of making voiddamn sure you get the other guy before he gets you.” Martial philosophy is more Crane’s street, if Breaker is expecting peals of wisdom from you he’s likely to be disappointed. But you relent and admit his point. “But sure, if you can’t avoid getting killed then going out with a bang is the next best thing I guess.”
“ ‘A BANG’ HMMM. OUR END WILL NOT BE QUIET, OF THAT I AM SURE.” The leader of the League of Dis seems to find your answer amusing.
