Yeah. I think Iran is showing itself to be a paper tiger but Turkey is a real tiger. I'm not a Turk or trying to push this idea, but they really are that and it's strange they don't get a lot of attention. The Turks are Muslims who underwent a rationalist reform when Ataturk proclaimed the state. This allows them to make stuff. The Iranians are led by clown fundamentalists and the Arabs who were on the periphery of the Turkish empire have never been able to pull off. Naturally the point of strength was at the center of the empire than on the periphery and they preserved a strong state:

Also the only Muslim country that comes to mind that can have an explicitly democratic Muslim party come to power peacefully without causing a catastrophe. Nasser might have been able to pull off a Kemalist move when he nationalized the Suez, but didn't follow through, and then came the reaction to all that in the form of Islamic fundamentalism, revivalism, armed insurrectionary Islam and so on.
