Their last recorded sighting was in 1979 and declared extinct in 2012
DNA wise there hasn't really been any efforts to clone them, yet. There's some debate over whether they're a subspecies of the Eurasian Otter or a unique species within the same genus. There are colonies of Eurasian Otters on some islands west of mainland Japan
