Argentina's government announced Thursday it has uncovered a Russian spy network accused of carrying out disinformation campaigns and influence operations to advance Moscow's geopolitical interests in the South American nation.
Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni said at a press briefing that the country's intelligence secretariat (SIDE) had identified five Russian nationals allegedly involved in the operation. He stated the group operated as part of an entity called "La Compañía" (The Company), which he linked to the Kremlin's "Project Lakhta," an influence operation formerly overseen by the late Wagner Group oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin.
"The objective of 'The Company' is to form a group of people loyal to Russia's interests to develop disinformation and influence campaigns against the Argentine state," Adorni said.[1][5]
The spokesman identified two of the alleged ringleaders as Lev Andriashvili and his wife, Irina Yakovenko, both Russian citizens residing in Argentina.[1][3][4] Andriashvili was allegedly responsible for "financing and promoting links with local collaborators," while Yakovenko focused on creating and spreading social media content, influencing local non-governmental organizations, and gathering political intelligence.
Adorni did not clarify whether the individuals had been arrested or if they were still in the country, noting that much of the investigation remains classified. "Argentina will not be subjected to the influence of any foreign power," he asserted.
