i guess i've just been much luckier, sorry you had to go through that regardless because i'm sure it can suck. i've never really been put off at all after meeting someone in person, but i'm very selective about who i actually pursue that meaningful a relationship with despite my public yearnings. not to say that you weren't, i'm sure i could get unlucky at some point if it happens again, but we'll see.

The Proteus effect is a phenomenon found in over 60 studies where people tend to conform behaviorally to their avatars' identity characteristics, especially in virtual reality.
Basically the way people's personalities shift (however slightly or drastically) to match their character, or some perceived idea of their character. a lot of the GAM/prison gay discourse around here stems from it to an extent, i think. the proteus effect has always just sorta disgusted me and i've always made it extremely clear how i'm not my character at all, i'm me, even if my characters contain little bits and pieces of me or how i choose to present myself and my identity online, they'll never paint a full picture or even an accurate one really. they're just characters.
