I don't think you necessarily need worldbuilding and character conflict to have good supports, some of my favorite supports in Engage don't have that but work well in my view with only the tone being more serious:
>Ivy and Diamant
>Alcryst and Celine
>Pandreo and Panette
>Jean and Zelkov
In all these supports there isn't really conflict between the characters or worldbuilding, just the characters growing closer to each other because they open up to each other and discuss what they are afraid of or what they lost.
I've enjoyed the support conversations from the DLC characters overall much more than the base game's. Does these supports have much more worldbuilding and conflict? Not really. They're just more grounded and serious because you're dealing with comrades who've fought together rather than strangers meeting for the first time.
