The problem is the focus. A positive millionaire character if possible, even as a main character among an ensemble, and specially if he's kind of a jerk and the real focus is his humbler family teaching him to be a better person.
Depicting his fortune as a representation of his bad side works well enough, but making him the only main character and showing his money as a measure of his experience, effort and struggles, with his bad sides coming from meeting the dishonest path to the same goal taken by other people is just not a story people are interested in now.
It's not exactly that we need to believe all rich people are evil and lazy and dumb. It's just a roundabout way of deluding ourselves into believing being poor proves we are also the opposite of those.
