I know this story, except it was Scottish and the girl in question was not an elf, but a selkie (seal mermaid). She took off her seal tail to walk the earth, the scotsman stole it and left her no choice but to marry him. So they had a lot of kids, and one day she asked the scotsman if she could have her tail back. He thought that she wouldn't abandon her now that they have a family, but he was wrong. She put the tail on, grabbed all of their kids and dove underwater, never to return. Additionally, there's a very similar tale in Japan, this time featuring a yuki-onna (snow elf).
