You are still operating out of a protestant, "Sola Scriptura" lens. This way of thinking was only invented about 500 years ago. That means over 3/4 of Christianity did not believe in Sola Scriptura, but instead regarded Christ's Church as the highest authority, which is obvious because this is even in the Holy Scriptures themselves.
