since having a king far away is like having no king at all

if yoou have a king who is close , he can control you and tyrannize you much more easily

Also there is technically no difference between a English duke who HAS to submit to the English crown and a local Indian king who HAS to submit to the crown - BOTH are subjects to the crown in the end
