40k is massively more popular than fantasy and the fanbase has a lot of overlap so some people are afraid a 40k game will permanently kill fantasy
not entirely unfounded fears, I just checked and warhammer vermintide has about 10% the active playerbase of 40k vermintide and iirc tableslop fantasy was killed of because the entire fantasy range was being outsold by the space marine faction alone
