Suburban identity in 2012 was White identity, and people still took pride in college degrees. These same people would be more hostile the moment you added any kind of race-related policy, but just campaigning on identity with very subtle messaging to avoid saying the quiet part out loud reached them. For reference, the Constitution Party that year did a more actively White policy focused campaign including a call for a US-Mexico border wall and it only made a dent in Virginia, although a number of Goode supporters switched to Trump in 2016.
