I assume the same, at least I remember in Kazuha's anecdote from the previous batch he said he was headed to Natlan but only if you picked one particular dialogue option when talking with him. Of course he could technically still be running around somewhere off-screen since the characters are supposed to live their own life without our involvement (which ironically is what the anecdotes are meant to show) but given that we never saw him there or heard from him again we might as well assume him going to Natlan isn't 'real' canon until Hoyo tells us about it. This is just one example, but ultimately I agree that it probably is best not to look too deep into what the characters say
