Well the criticism was that one piece was much more conforming to the ideas of journey to the west than dragon ball while discounting the fact that the monkey king really wasn't a free agent who only lived for himself for most of the story. The one upsmanship on these kind of comparisons is really odd and divorced from the circumstances they were written in.
