Man Jailed for Brutal Murder Reappears as Decorated Student After Reported Military Service

A man sentenced to 15 years in a penal colony for the brutal 2021 murder of his teenage girlfriend has been pictured receiving a university award, reportedly after being released from prison to fight in the Special Military Operation in Ukraine.
In August 2022, Fyodor Khizhin, then 19, was convicted of murdering his 17-year-old girlfriend with extreme cruelty. The court found he had stabbed her at least 59 times during an argument over money for drugs. Prosecutors stated the attack was driven by his need for money to buy mephedrone. After the killing, Khizhin stole 3,000 rubles, a laptop, and a phone from the victim before fleeing. He was sentenced to 15 years in a strict-regime penal colony and ordered to pay 1 million rubles in moral damages.
However, in a December 2024 publication, Khizhin was shown being honored at the Baltic State Technical University ("Voenmeh") in St. Petersburg. The university's acting rector, Alexander Shashurin, presented him with an award for his "contribution and efforts in the defense and defensive capability of our country." The university's post praised the "self-sacrifice and resilience" of decorated students who had participated in the military operation.
The exact circumstances of Khizhin's release from prison and his subsequent pardon remain unclear. Court records show that his appeal for a more lenient sentence was rejected as recently as April 2023. His reappearance as a student has drawn attention on Russian social media platforms.
