My favorite period in development is easily Solomon's schism.
>Be king of all Israelites
>Son of THE King that make your kingdom what it is
>Inherit his wisdom but with "something more"
>The consequences of which you could never anticipate
>Be on record consorting with actual fucking demons
>Make several books on your knowledge of magicks
>This is all predicated on your desire to bring yourself and your people closer to God
>With that single want, your heart is tempted
>Sects are formed based on new doctrines
>Still all at a time before the Word of God is put in proper writing
>The three main sects are the purists, sticking to the doctrine of Moses, the magicians seeking "truth" in the path you opened, and the deceivers that wormed their way into your court to corrupt your people
>Be warned that you have brought ruin to your people for the innocent sin
>The downfall of your empire begins then and there with decadence being the first of the dominoes
>A thousand years later, the deceivers and the purists evolved into the pharises and the christians
>The magicians reclused themselves to the shadows and work in secret (work to maintain relevance)
>Two thousand years after that and the sects created from your sins still exist, eternally rooted within society with the spirit of your sin being committed in perpetuity
The sins of Solomon are actually reflective of the Original Sin itself. It's almost like a strictly human trait where given the choice between animalistic innocence and understanding at the cost of knowing the difference between good and evil, we (almost) always choose the latter, no matter how much suffering it brings.
But that's really a generalized statement about humanity as a whole. If you polled people individually, you'd find people would rather choke on the sand their head is buried in than take responsibility for their own actions.
I know I'm rambling, but in my defense, nip whisky is pretty good.
